“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”
What is Portraiture?
In people photography there are different approaches for different subjects and situations.
Classic Portraiture can be defined as an artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant, often showing likeness, personality and even the mood of the person. In photography this involves careful attention to posing, lighting and surroundings to achieve an artistic vision. I love creating beautiful portraits of people. My style is based on classic elegance with inspiration from fine art and a dash of glamour. I offer portraits for people of all ages and sizes and so far the subjects have ranged from a few days old to a lady on her 90th birthday!
I create these images using a wide variety of artistic, photographic and digital techniques to capture the personality of the subject and enhance their natural beauty. My biggest personal reward often comes from working with clients who think they are unattractive and hate being photographed. When presented with their images these people often want to come back for another session – are you up for the challenge?
The classic portraiture approach is great for adults and newborn babies, but is hopeless for small children who generally are unable to follow complex instructions or pay attention for longer periods.
Family Sessions are generally more successful with a more relaxed and candid approach where images and lighting are planned, but kids are diverted to activities and encouraged to explore while I follow them with the camera. This means a no stress situation that allows the images to reflect the personality of your child and is often great fun for everyone involved. Mind you, there are some kids who just naturally like to show off!
There is no reason why your session cannot have aspects of both of these styles and the process is much the same. I will discuss this with you as part of the booking and preparation process. Either way, our focus is making you feel comfortable in front of the camera and creating beautiful images that you will love and which will be treasured by you and your family for many years.
