Marion Bay is a small village at the toe of the “boot” shape of the Yorke Peninsula. Like Port Julia there is not much here other than a Tavern, General Store and Caravan Park. The town is the gateway to Innes National Park which we unfortunately were not able to see due to the dogs. Our neighbours at the caravan park offered to dog sit, but we were concerned that Goldie would whinge and drive them nuts!
There is a small flock of pelicans here, they are my favourite birds but standing under the streetlights is not recommended!
There are none of the old stone buildings here, the houses vary from run down beach shacks made of AC sheeting to fancy new homes with a boat in the shed and a tractor in the carport (to launch the boat of course, why else would anyone need a tractor!)
On the southern end of the town is penguin point which is absolutely beautiful. There are car parks and well maintained walking tracks and the views are great.
Around the point here is another nice bay, in the middle is the wreck of the 2704 ton SS Willyana which sank here in 1907. There are a large number of wrecks around the Yorke, I only wish it was a bit warmer and had remembered to take the snorkelling gear.
We were unable to visit the National Park so the best we could do was to head over to the Eastern edge for a look. This area is rugged and unspoilt and there are few people around to spoil the experience. Gym Beach is at the edge of the park and we enjoyed yet another beautiful sunset.
